Legal Basis for Cass County Booking Data

Minnesota Statute 13.82 classifies all arrest and law enforcement data as public. This means anyone can access booking information including names, dates, arresting agencies, and charges without making a formal request or stating a reason. Minnesota Statute 13.85 requires the same openness for correctional facility records, including inmate rosters.

Minnesota Statute 641.05 creates the sheriff's legal duty to maintain a formal booking log. Every admission and release must be recorded with the time and reason. These three statutes together mean Cass County must both keep these records and make them available to the public, which it does through the twice-daily In-Custody Report PDF.
